Target Audience
This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of medical oncologists and other medical professionals who assess and treat breast cancer patients.
Educational Objectives
Following completion of this activity, participants should be able to: understand the recent data from the major trials of endocrine therapy in early breast cancer and implications for patient care; understand the leading treatment strategies that combine endocrine therapy with chemotherapy and/or with biologic agents and implications for patient care; and discuss recent data on breast cancer prevention, and implications for patient care.
Educational Need
Our understanding of the roles of the estrogen receptor and other growth factor pathway interactions in breast cancer biology has accelerated over the past six years, fueled by advances in basic research, new studies of existing therapies, and clinical evaluation of several new agents. Oncologists who counsel and treat breast cancer patients need to be aware of the most current clinical trial data and recommendations for the use of these agents alone and in combination with other agents in early and late-stage disease and in breast cancer prevention.
