Target Audience
This educational activity is intended for oncologists, thoracic surgeons, radiologists and other medical professionals who assess, counsel, and treat lung cancer patients.

Learning Objectives
After successfully completing this CME activity, participants should be able to discuss treatment options for early-stage lung cancer patients, including:

  • Key elements of a preoperative workup
  • Pros/cons of using radiofrequency ablation to treat poor surgical risk patients
  • Appropriate use of chemotherapy and radiation therapy in stage II and III lung cancer
  • Appropriate use of chemotherapy in treating stage Ia and Ib lung cancer
  • Information needed to assess potential future role of adjuvant targeted therapy

Educational Need
Treating early-stage lung cancer is especially challenging, as patients often present while they still feel healthy, and it can be difficult to assess when the benefits of initiating treatment will outweigh the negative effects of intervention. Medical professionals who counsel and treat patients with early-stage disease need to be aware of the most current data and recommendations for assessing and determining the timing and course of treatment for these patients.
