Advances in Treating Metastatic Bone Cancer

First Cambridge Conference - October 2005

This program was based on a conference of multidisciplinary leaders in bone cancer research and clinical care. The focus of the program was to review new data, assess where we are, highlight what is important and promising, and make recommendations for future research.

The program developed content for a peer reviewed educational journal publication for medical oncologists and other health care professionals who wish to expand their understanding of advances in the evaluation and treatment of bone cancer.

This program was directed by Allan Lipton, MD, Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine, James R. Berenson, MD, The Institute for Myeloma and Bone Cancer Research, Robert E. Coleman, MD, FRCP, Cancer Research Centre, Weston Park Hospital, Theresa A. Guise, MD, University of Virginia, and Matthew R. Smith, MD, PhD, Massachusetts General Hospital.

Educational Objectives
(1) Review important new aspects of bone biology as they pertain to new approaches to disease management; (2) discuss current approaches to assessing bone metastases and skeletal complications in cancer patients;(3) assess current therapies for metastatic bone cancer; (4) discuss current approaches to bone pain assessment and treatment; and (5) assess approaches to treat bone loss associated with cancer therapies.
